3 Things Landscape Professionals Will Tell You about Landscape Irrigation

Landscape irrigation can save you a lot of time, money, and energy, but only if it functions when it should function, and the way that it should function. Here are the top three things that a pro will tell you to fix or use before you install your system.

1. Use a filter:

A filter is a critical piece of equipment especially on a drip irrigation system. Using a filter will save the homeowner the hassle of dealing with clogged emitters. A filter is recommended even on municipal water systems because dirt and other debris can find its way into the piping of your irrigation system during installation and repairs.

2. Check your water pressure:

Residential irrigation systems work best when the water pressure is between 45 to 50 PSI. Not all community water systems or well systems have enough water pressure to make an irrigation system work properly. If your system suffers from low water pressure, this can be corrected by installing a booster pump.

3. Do a system Check-up:

Most irrigation systems operate in the early morning hours when many people are still asleep or busy getting ready for work. A broken sprinkler head may go unnoticed for weeks. It’s a good idea to periodically turn on your sprinkler system manually. By using the manual function on your controller you can “walk through” your system to make sure everything is functioning properly and it only takes a few minutes. Doing a quick system check-up every couple of weeks can help you identify sprinkler heads that are not functioning properly. The time you spend will be minimal and will save you a lot of work and expense.
